New food-to-go launches at lunch! 2012: Exhibitor show highlights
Attendees to next week’s lunch! trade show, on 20-21 September at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London, will be treated to a wealth of delicious new food products. Now in its fifth year and featuring 236 exhibitors, lunch! is widely recognised as the ‘must attend’ event for professional buyers and press representatives looking get the scoop on all the latest trends and get an exclusive preview of new food-to-go launches before they reach retailers’ shelves. The following is just a taste of what’s on show from ‘food’ exhibitors this year.
Mission Foods (stand U218) is adding new variety to the flatbread category with the launch of its new range of fruited flatbreads. As an indulgent treat, the Mission fruited flatbread range has a fat content of less than 3% compared to the average 25% fat contained in a croissant. With three flavours to choose from – Cranberry & Orange, Honey & Raison and Berry & Seed – the flatbreads offer operators the ultimate convenience with simple thaw and serve or toast preparation. Enjoyed on its own or with toppings, Mission fruited flatbreads can be enjoyed throughout the day – at breakfast, as afternoon tea, or with ice cream as a dessert treat.
Joe & Seph’s Gourmet Popcorn make what the Great Taste Awards (they now have 8 Gold Awards), press and its customers consider to be the best tasting popcorn on the market and it is now available in brand new 32g-35g snack packs. Retailers Camden Food Co, pod and Sourced Market are the first to champion these snack packs and are seeing some truly excellent results. Flavours include Goats Cheese & Black Pepper, Cheddar Cheese, Honey & Hazelnut, Salted Caramel and Toffee Apple & Cinnamon (stand U301).
Carrs Foods International (stand U209) will be showcasing its St Pierre Brioche-to-Go – a new range of traditional, sweet French bakery products. Individually wrapped for freshness and convenience, they are available in a variety of shapes and flavours. Ideal for the travel, leisure and coffee shop sectors, they suit a wide range of service operations, to eat in or takeaway. Enriched with egg and crème fraîche, they tempt customers to try a delicious alternative to morning pastries or anytime-snacks.
Freedom Deli (stand U205) provides delicious, handmade, healthy food, which is gloriously gluten and wheat free. Its traditional award winning range is becoming ever popular with health shoppers, as well as specialist diet shoppers, and is quickly becoming a brand consumers are choosing for quality and taste. Freedom Deli will be launching its newest range of filled Panini products at lunch! 2012. Available in 3 popular varieties, they are frozen and ready to heat and serve within the packaging in a regular Panini grill or oven. They are ideal for food service or retailers wishing to offer added value to their specialist diet or health customers without the waste associated with a chilled product.
Cheese Cellar (stand 531) distributes a wide range of top quality products across food service and retail. They work with small producers in the UK, and across the world, sourcing speciality cheese, charcuterie, olives, Mediterranean vegetables, condiments such as mustard and chutney and much more. New products at lunch! include a fresh addition to the Alex James Presents range of artisan cheese. The Goddess cheese made from Guernsey milk will be distributed exclusively by Cheese Cellar along with the existing two goat cheeses; Farleigh Wallop and Little Wallop. More new cheeses for the autumn include Bleu des Basques a unique ewe’s milk cheese from the Pyrenees; plus there’s also a new chutney and condiment range – available to taste on stand 531.
Eltoni Pasta/Good Pots will be launching the world’s fastest fine pasta meals from their ‘Good Pots’ range. At lunch! on stand 348, it will be challenging visitors to take its 10 second Penne challenge (from storage to the best hot pasta ever tasted). See new speedy Tortellini, Ravioli & Gnocchi and marvel at the quality. New sauces include Bolognaise, Carbonara, Pesto, Meatball Marinara and many more!
The Fresh Olive Company/Belazu (stand L7) will be introducing its new range of snack olives, crafted using unique recipes from 20 years’ experience as premier Med food supplier to Britain’s top restaurants. Tasty, neat and ready to eat, new Belazu snack olives can be kept in the cupboard or on consumers’ desk ready for lunch. With no added colours, flavourings or preservatives, they are available in three delicious flavours: Vinci, Olympia and Pistou.
This year, award-winning pastry specialist Pidy unveils a groundbreaking healthy canapé range based on fruit and vegetables, plus new flavours of ready-to-fill sable tartlet shells. Their stand theme is food-to-go – Continental Style, focusing on pieces suitable for slicing, hand-held and takeaway. With its core range now available through Amazon and branding activities stepping up, GM Robert Whittle can’t wait to tell lunch! visitors about Pidy’s plans to expand into retail (stand 448).
The 2012 lunch! show features the debut appearance of The Fabulous Bakin’ Boys! Established in 1997 by entrepreneurial brothers Gary and Jon Frank, the Bakin’ Boys have gone from strength to strength as a leading popular baked goods manufacturer. Synonymous with fun, innovation and great quality, the Boys will be showcasing their exciting new Impulse range of Muffins, Flapjacks, Loafcakes and Slices. The dazzling new products incorporate new recipes and flavours, as well as funky packaging that will build on their well-established retail presence (stand 344).
The Pembrokeshire Beach Food Company provides an exciting seafood menu and a fantastic concept that lunch! visitors will simply love. ‘Bringing the Beach to the Street’ – the company has evolved to being voted ‘Best of the Best’ at the British Street Food Awards in 2011 and feeding the athletes at the Olympic Games, and are at the forefront of innovation.
Nākd Wholefoods (Natural Balance Foods) has extended its popular Nākd bar range, with two innovative new flavours – Rhubarb & Custard and Caffé Mocha. Responding to the growing trend for retro flavours and healthy on-the-go snacks, both varieties are made from a simple combination of raw fruits and nuts, containing no added sugars or syrups. What’s more, the bars are wheat, dairy and gluten free and count as one of consumers’ five a day (stand 423).
Good things come wrapped in twos and Kent & Fraser – Deliciously Gluten Free will be launching their brand new twin packs of gluten-free biscuits, cookies and shortbread at lunch! 2012. Perfect for trains, planes and automobiles and precisely portioned for hospitality and food-to-go. The award-winning Kent & Fraser range is all-natural, gluten free, wheat free and egg free, so these gorgeous new twin packs make the perfect travelling companion and can be enjoyed by all (stand U116).
Grasshopper Foods (stand U115) is a unique, exciting addition to the instant food market. 100% natural ingredients and flat-packed pots makes them one of the most portable meals around. Today’s busy lifestyle leaves many with little time to cook 3 meals a day from scratch. That’s where the unique, fun Hopper pots from Grasshopper come in. A full-size porridge portion in one compressed pot, makes it the go-to choice for breakfast, lunch or a filling snack on the go, at work, or out and about. With 2 pot variations and five delicious flavours, Grasshopper is porridge…but not as you know it!
Following on from the launch of café delice, winning Gold for the new Toblerone Pasty in the lunch! Innovation Challenge and generating an impressive number of new business leads, Delice de France are building on the success of 2011 and are hosting a stand at lunch! 2012. The brand will be focusing on core product lines, quality and service and highlighting the latest product innovations. The look and feel of the stand will be similar to the new catalogue – showcasing a French ‘shabby chic’ look featuring wooden tables and crates as well as hero product photography and lifestyle shots, which champion its bakery expertise (stand 108).
The Collective’s gourmet probiotic yoghurts taste like no other, they’re thick and creamy, have a gorgeous silky texture with a double layer of delicious fruit or fudge sauce. The perfect breakfast, guilt-free dessert (only 5% fat!) or midnight snack, in fact, they’re pretty scrummy any time! Based on a Kiwi recipe, but using West Country milk, the yoghurts are available in a variety of addictive fresh fruit flavours, as well as Russian Fudge in 500g sharing tubs, 170g single-serve pots and nifty 4-packs. What’s more, all the yoghurts contain probiotics, they’re vegetarian, gluten free and have no artificial colours, preservatives or flavourings (stand 528).
Simply Ice Cream, Kent’s premier artisan ice cream producer, has created a delicious limited edition Pumpkin flavoured ice cream in time for Hallowe’en this year. The new Pumpkin flavour will be joining Simply Ice Cream’s multi-award winning range for a limited time only. Simply Ice Cream Pumpkin flavour is made with real pumpkin pieces, which are combined with sugar and spices in the Simply Ice Cream kitchens. The caramelised pumpkin mixture is then blended with Simply’s signature indulgently rich ice cream. The result is a creamy caramelised nutty flavour, giving a new twist to traditional Hallowe’en fayre (stand 535).
Multi award winning Tideford Organics Foods are launching their new range of soups, sauces, and porridges on stand 235. These gluten free, low salt, low fat, vegetarian and vegan products have no additives or preservatives. Customers include major multiples, national coffee chains and independents nationwide. Available in single serve microwaveable formats and catering packs perfect for the food-to-go sector.
New York Delhi’s wonderfully unique natural seasonings applied to premium grade oven baked cashews – offered in its trade mark silver quad foil bag under yet another clever brand. King Cashews (because Cashew is king) comes in a range of 3 flavours, which are baked for a delicious and healthier snacking experience. Already listed by Fortnum & Mason well in advance of their launch, they are another truly innovative offering from the team at New York Delhi (stand 341).
GLORIOUS! Foods create bold and exciting soups, sauces and dips, which are ideal for busy and adventurous people. Great for food to go outlets big or small, they will be demonstrating the versatility of its range on stand U204.
Discovery Foods – Santa Maria is set to unveil two innovative food concepts at this year’s lunch! on stand 110. Gourmet Wraps is an exciting concept developed to showcase the unique ‘more. by Santa Maria spice range’. Gourmet Wraps will introduce innovative new flavours and encourage caterers to create exotic recipes, which will transform the sandwich market and meet the demands of this quickly evolving sector. Hot Wraps offer a lighter, more profitable alternative to other speciality breads, using quality ingredients to deliver the best flavours. The concept includes a variety of menu solutions inspired by Discovery’s core Mexican products – simply fill, fold and grill to create a perfect lunchtime option.
Following the success of their porridge bars, Stoats will be launching a new range of Sports Bars at lunch! on stand 129. After months of recipe testing on athletes and working with nutritionists, the Stoats Sports Bars are ready. The Almonds & Mixed Seeds Pre-Training Bar provides 16g protein and low levels of carbohydrate for enhanced workout performance. The chewy Sultanas & Cranberries Post-Training Bar provides a further 13g protein for improved recovery.
Bells of Lazonby (stand 114) have joined forces with Central Foods for the exclusive distribution of their frozen We Love Cake range into Food Service. The range includes Round Cakes, Tray bakes and, the latest exciting addition, gluten, wheat and dairy free individually wrapped cake slices. Launched in July, the range includes 5 varieties which have all been made in a dedicated free-from bakery.
Pan’Artisan, originally La Pizza Company, will again be launching its latest new products at lunch!, following an abundance of quality leads last year. For 2012, they will be launching its a 5” Tasca; a smaller version of its highly popular, folded, soft bread pocket, and Tear and Share Garlic Bread, both newly available in a cash & carry pack. The 5” Tasca is available in packs of 6 in Plain, Red Onion, Caesar or Multigrain and Tear & Share Garlic Bread is available in packs of 2. Sample these latest launches, as well as the Sorrentini, the innovative and convenient way to eat pizza on stand 336.
Visitors to the forthcoming lunch! will be able to sample the UK’s tastiest, crunchiest crisps on stand 226, where the Pipers Crisp Company will be showing their rebranded range of gourmet crisps. And it’s not just their taste that sets Pipers Crisps apart from their competitors and makes them such an attractive proposition for discerning independent outlets. It’s also because Pipers has pledged never to sell their crisps through major supermarkets, giving the independents a genuinely tasty point of difference. The range comprises seven great-tasting varieties: Lye Cross Cheddar and Onion; Burrow Hill Cider Vinegar and Sea Salt; Karnataka Black Pepper and Sea Salt; Anglesey Sea Salt; Wissington Spicy Tomato; Biggleswade Sweet Chilli; and Unsalted. Pack sizes are 40g or sharing bags of 150g.
kff (stand 308) supply a diverse customer base with an extensive range of frozen, chilled and grocery products, many of which are ideal for coffee shops and those with a ‘food-to-go’ offering. Essentials like muffins, bagels and cupcakes can be found alongside other more innovative ‘grab-and-go’ products. As sandwiches are considered to be one of the most integral product categories for the food-to-go market, selecting the right sandwich fillings is essential! The Purple Pineapple range from kff consists of a variety of over 60 high quality hand produced fillings.
Yummy Foods Corporation (stand U109) has created a ground-breaking, eco-friendly innovation in food preparation, distribution and cooking, with the introduction of its ‘All-In-One Meal Pack’, which contains a choice from the Yummy Platter (Lamb, Chicken, Fish, Beef, Potatoes and 3 types of vegetables). All ingredients are fresh with no preservatives, and no saturated fat. A special social media web App has been developed to empower consumers to participate and influence what goes into the All-in-one pack that will be supplied by the supermarkets. Using ordinary kitchen utensils, the All in-one pack is cooked under 10 minutes, using no water, saving 80% energy, saving 80% in Co2 emissions, whilst retaining all vital nutrients in the food.
INNOVATION ZONE 2012
NISI’S artisan bakery, which produces hand-baked Italian biscuits in the UK, will be sampling its triple gold winning Ginger macaroon on stand IZ-11 in the Innovation Zone. They will also be showcasing its individually wrapped biscotti, which offer the independent coffee shop trade an alternative to the imported Italian biscotti. Lots of medals won at this year’s Great Taste Awards!
Propercorn (stand IZ-13, Innovation Zone) is the young British gourmet popcorn brand, which is ready to show the nation how popcorn is done properly. Following secret recipes that use only the most authentic ingredients (including garden chives, roasted onions, sun-dried tomatoes and crème fraîche), the freshly popped butterfly corn is delicately tumbled to create a delicious, guilt-free snack and comes pillow packed in 4 delicious flavours: Fiery Worcester Sauce & Sun Dried Tomato, Sweet & Salty, Sour Cream & Chive, and Lightly Sea Salted.
British charcuterie specialists Serious Pig, who won a Great Taste Award in 2011 with their high-class Snacking Salami, are launching an exciting and innovative new product (stand IZ-20, Innovation Zone). Called ‘Snackingham’ (one word), it’s exactly what it says on the pack – ham for snacking! Being high in protein and low in fat also makes it ideal for those seeking a healthier snack alternative to carb and fat-laden crisps or nuts which are high calorie. Snackingham comes in two varieties: ‘Classic’ infused with herbs and spices including caraway, fennel, coriander and black pepper, and ‘Chilli & Ginger’ which delivers the moreish combination of chipotle chilli and tangy ginger with a subtle kick.
Samosaco, from South Wales, will be introducing a range of pickles and sauces at lunch!, including Great Taste 2 gold Star award winning Keralan Aubergine Pickle. Also on show will be a new meat free and egg free product – Glamorgan Sausages in 3 formats (Regular, with Garlic, and with Chilli), plus its range of ready to bake Samosas and Bhajees (stand IZ-24, Innovation Zone).
Distributor Serbian Natural Food (stand IZ-29, Innovation Zone,) will be unveiling some new additions to the Foodland ‘nature in a jar’ range at this year’s lunch!. These include 95% Roasted Red Pepper spread, which has 14 different uses, and Rose hip butter, with lemon juice – admired by generations in some parts of Europe. Products are new to the UK and free from all additives. An organic version is also available.
Pourtoi Artisan Chocolatier is a multi award-winning dedicated gluten free artisan bakery. lunch! sees the launch of its new range of individually wrapped, award winning Cinnamon Pecan Blondies, and seriously chocolatey Brownies. Plus it will also be adding 3 new double chocolate Cookie flavours (Double Choc Fruit & Nut, Double Choc Pecan and Double Choc Chilli) to complement its expanding range. A small range of ‘tray bakes’ will also be introduced on stand IZ-32, Innovation Zone.
Just Crisps have launched a new 150g ‘share bag’ range in their two award winning flavours – Sea Salt and Black Pepper & Sea Salt – as well as in the popular Mature Cheddar & Red Onion variety. Just Crisps are produced on the farm in Staffordshire, where their potatoes are sliced with their skins on to give a rustic look, the starch is washed off to give them a softer bite, cooked in their own award winning Just Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Rapeseed Oil, and then flavoured by hand, bagged, boxed and delivered to their customers. As well as being 100% British, Just Rapeseed Oil is 35% lower in saturated fat than Sunflower Oil (stand IZ-37, Innovation Zone).
Easy Bean – Healthy One-Pots, the maker of the original one-pot meals, is launching a Seasonal Speciality line as part of their range (stand IZ-41, Innovation Zone). Striking packaging will denote that this is a special recipe. With autumn in mind, the delicious Italian Pasta e Fagioli will be available to retailers in September. This is true rustic cuisine from Italy – borlotti beans and orecchiette pasta with porcini mushrooms, celeriac in a creamy sauce.
